Characters are often used as symbols in literature; their thoughts, actions, and beliefs help the author tell us the moral of their story. For Ralph (and other characters such as Jack, Simon, and Piggy) you will want to pay attention to:
- How others view the character
- How the character acts
- What the character believes or views is important
....And, MOST IMPORTANTLY, how those things change over the course of the story.
How the character acts: I am on the third chapter and I think that Ralph is a good leader but he is under pressure because he wants to be friends with Piggy but when he is with Jack he feels that he should ignore Piggy and be mean to him.
ReplyDeleteYou are on the right track, Abby. Why do you think he feels like he has to ignore Piggy? Why do you think he acts this way around Jack?
ReplyDeleteI think that everyone thinks Piggy is kind of a loser and Ralph feels that if he is friends with Piggy than the other boys won't think of him as a leader, they will think of him as a loser. I also think that he acts like that around Jack because he knows that Jack was the cool leader of the choir of boys, and Ralph needs to be just as cool as him.
ReplyDeleteAll of that is true, Abby. Have you noticed anything new as you have read more?
ReplyDeleteI have not read for a while but I am reading now!!!
ReplyDeleteJust to add on to what Abby was saying, I agree that Ralph feels pressure from the boys to be "cool" but i also think he is overwhelmed with so many different ideas, he doesn't know what to tell people to do. He loves the power that he has, but I think he is not sure whether he should agree with Jack's thoughts ( Because everyone always agrees with Jack) or Piggy's (because he actually thinks things through.
ReplyDeleteKatherine--
ReplyDeleteI appreciate the addition. It is my hope that you guys add more and more to each other's thoughts!
I think you are right on the money with Ralph. We all know that he LOVES the power (who wouldn't?) but we get a feeling that he doesn't know what to do with all that power.
His loyalties and sheer confusion continue and become more evident as the book goes on...
I feel like Ralph I double sided at first I liked him and now he has gotten too controlling. I also don't like the way he is treating the rest of the group .
