Characters are often used as symbols in literature; their thoughts, actions, and beliefs help the author tell us the moral of their story. For Simon (and other characters such as Ralph, Jack, and Piggy) you will want to pay attention to:
- How others view the character
- How the character acts
- What the character believes or views is important
....and MOST IMPORTANTLY, how those things change over the course of the story.
I think that the young boy named Simon symbolizes the innocence of humanity because Simon seems to be the only person acting normally when the boys reek havoc amongst themselves and that when Simon is put to death it symbolizes that there is no trace of goodness left in the hearts and minds of the boys on the island because they all have turned to savagery.
