Piggy in and of himself is a symbol in this story; his glasses, however, are especially symbolic. In this category, you may post about Piggy, what he says, how he acts, what kind of person he is, etc. But, you may also write about what you notice about his glasses and how they might be important to the story.
Piggy is ignored because the boys think he is a loser.. I mean it doesn't help that his nickname is Piggy. I think that the boys should give him a chance because he has really good ideas and insight, but no one takes the time to listen to him.
ReplyDeleteDo you think them ignoring them could be a part of what he means to the book/story?
ReplyDeleteAnd, no-- his nickname certainly doesn't help! What do you think might happen to him as the book progresses?
I think Piggy will get fed up with the boys and venture out on his own.. and ditch them for good, but then something will happen causing the boys to all work together to save mankind... yes I am only on the fourth chapter and I came up with that great theory... I've got skillz
ReplyDeleteI think that the boys take advantage of Piggy's intelligence. They steel his glasses to start fires and bullie him. I also agree with Abby about his nickname. My prediction is that piggy will be the leader of a new group that breaks away from everybody.
ReplyDeleteHannah and Abby--
ReplyDeleteYour comments together are really coming up with something. Hannah, you are SO on the right track with what you think Piggy's glasses may represent. Great job and keep going! And, of course, keep these symbols in mind as you read more and they keep popping up!
Hannah's post gave me an idea. I think that piggy might symbolize science or general intelligence because he seems to be the only one on the island whose coming up ideas that have become a huge importance in the book. For example, how to blow into the conch shell to call the others.
ReplyDeleteGreat example, Nick. I wonder if you (or anyone else) can come up with any more ideas to support this theory?
ReplyDeleteTowards the end of the book, when Jack and his hunters steal Piggy's glasses, Ralph and the people who have stayed with him realize that Jack's group is there to battle, they are coming on strong and know they have something that Piggy needs. Which is why their group goes to find the hunters, which causes Piggy's death. Which changes the book completely.
