The "Beast" is something that comes into the story a little bit later on. You'll want to write about how the boys view and talk about the Beast; where they think it lives, when they talk about it, when they think they see it....etc. You will probably not figure out the symbolic meaning of the Beast until very late in the story but it is still important to look for throughout.
In my opinion, I think that the beast is a symbol for fear because it all started with one person claiming to see a snake-like creature in the woods and began to get more and more people frightened. Even though there's no proof of an actual beast or beastie.
ReplyDeleteGreat start, Nick. Keep your eye out-- you are on the right track. The Beast is talked about more and more as the book goes on and you'll be able to focus your ideas down quickly.
ReplyDeleteI also agree with Nick I think it is there fear.
ReplyDeleteThe beast seems to control the boys' behavior, seeing as they are always concerned with what the beast is doing and where it is. It is almost like they're more concerned with the beast then they are about getting rescued
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think that the Beast is an ever-occurring distraction that always appears when they are concerned about being rescued the most.
ReplyDeleteOH MY GOODNESS, YOU GUYS ARE GETTING SO CLOSE! It is so unbelievable to hear this kind of conversation and collaboration of ideas. The idea of fear (Yay, Nick and Hannah!) plus the beast's ability to control the boys' behavior (good thinking, Katherine)...PLUS the idea of when the beast appears (very nice, Abby!) is all adding up to something huge.
ReplyDeleteKeep at it...
Not only does it represent a distraction, but the beast is also representing the good and evil not only in the boys, but in the atmosphere of the island as well.
